Joel Levy is originally from Brooklyn, NY and grew up in Spring Valley, just outside New York City. Joel says “I enjoy working with both individuals and business owners, and get great satisfaction in assisting them with their financial, tax and planning concerns.”
Joel began his career working for two large Manhattan firms before moving to Florida in pursuit of a better quality of life for his family. Joel started a CPA practice in North Miami Beach, moved the practice to nearby Pembroke Pines and finally to Fort Lauderdale, all located in Broward County, Florida. Joel then served as Chief Financial Officer for a large manufacturing company. In 1994, Joel returned to private practice in Boca Raton, Florida until 2007 when he became a “halfback,” moving to Chapel Hill, North Carolina and establishing Joel I. Levy, CPA, PLLC.
Joel attended Ithaca College and majored in music. He then transferred to City University of New York Lehman College in the Bronx. Anyone who really knows Joel, knows his favorite hobbies are golf and music. But what he is most proud of are his two children and four grandchildren.
Joel’s “words to live by”“Treat people the way I want to be treated, with due respect, regardless of stature.”
A Native New Yorker, Sheila Levy hails from the Big Apple – New York City. When asked what attracted her to accounting, Sheila laughs and says “I think it was genetically predetermined.” Sheila’s mother was a CPA who got her Certification back in the 1940s when it was rare for a woman to earn those credentials. Sheila’s mother put her to work adding figures, as well as typing W-2s for some of her clients.
While living in Florida, Sheila worked with Joel, her husband to build an accounting practice. When Joel transitioned to private industry as a CFO, Sheila stayed on with the CPA that took over their practice. After the Levys moved to Chapel Hill, Sheila was bookkeeper for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce. It didn’t take long for Sheila to rejoin Joel as they developed Joel I. Levy, CPA, PPLC in the heart of the Tar Heel state.
As a high school student living in Spring Valley, NY, Sheila took classes at Rockland Community College. Upon graduating, she attended State University of New York College at Cortland, and eventually transferred to City University of New York Lehman College in the Bronx. Sheila says she’s proud of “still being married to Joel after 43 years of living and working with him for most of that time. And having raised two wonderful children who have given me the joy of being a ‘Nana’.”
Sheila’s “words to live by”
Essence of a New Day: This is the beginning of a new day. You have been given this day to use as you will. You can waste it or use it for good. What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever; in its place is something you have left behind… let it be something good.
