Same-Sex Couples Now Jointly Filing Federal, State Taxes for First Time

Joel Levy was briefly interviewed regarding this historic tax day. From Chris Williams, reporting for Time Warner Cable News:

Tax Day 2016 will be historic. For the first time ever, same-sex couples across the country will be able to jointly file both federal and state taxes.

Couples could already do this on the federal level. But after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized gay marriage in all states, couples can now jointly do both. Since North Carolina legalized gay marriages in 2014, eligible same-sex couples could have jointly filed state and federal taxes in 2015, but many tax accountants say couples are doing it for the first time this year.

“That brought a new perspective to tax filing. I’ve had several clients I’ve worked with and helped through that process,” said Chapel Hill-based tax accountant Joel Levy.
